Please allow us to formally introduce you to San Diego-based singer/songwriter Torrey Mercer who brings a one-of-a-kind charisma to the stage and a unique experience to her fans through her fusion of soul and rock genres. With her early beginnings in musical theater, Torrey was trained vocally in a number of different styles such as pop, jazz, rock, blues, and Broadway, including classical, which she began at the age of 9. It was this upbringing that influenced her to embrace different sounds and incorporate them in the arrangement you hear in her music today. Blending the sounds of synth pop, light rock, and elements of blues and soul, Torrey’s musicality has a pull that impacts it’s listeners with sheer power. And with her lyrics, she provides insight and comfort on topics surrounding self-esteem, body image, and relationships.
Torrey first entered the music scene with original content at the age of 17 – writing and releasing a young pop music sound that would later mature with her life experience and vocal seasoning. Her single "Looking Glass" was released in 2012, winning her the Indie Music Channel Award for Best Pop Song in 2013, and was nominated for numerous other awards. In 2014, Torrey released two singles, "I Believe in Me", a soulful and uplifting anthem about self-esteem and "Lies & Lipstick", which speaks on a failed friendship. In 2014, she was also named Best Teen Artist by the Artists in Music Awards, and Inspirational Artist of the Year by Critic's Choice. And in early 2015, she was named Peacemaker of the Year by the Encinitas Rotary Club out of San Diego, California, for the humanitarian work she has always paired with her music, later releasing Be Your Own Hero.
Today Torrey is unveiling her newest single called "Snake Bite", which also serves as the second single following "Miles" to be lifted from her forthcoming 5-song debut EP, Exhale due for release on February 5th.
Speaking on the track, Torrey tells Popdust, who premiered the single earlier today:
"It's about a relationship that was intense from the start, and that became unhealthy just as fast as it began. We fell in love quickly, but just as quickly he got verbally and emotionally abusive, and ended up cheating on me. For a long time I was hesitant to write this song because I was scared of exposing what happened in this relationship to everyone…but I didn’t want to be silenced anymore. He was the kind of guy who went through relationship after relationship like this, and I know that there’s others out there who relate to this same thing. I wanted to write a song to give those who feel trapped in a relationship a voice, and to hopefully empower them to get themselves out of that dark place."
