FEMME - Ring My Bell (Anita Ward Cover)

Over the next few weeks, London-based singer/songwriter and producer Laura Bettinson, otherwise known as FEMME, who has been described as a "one-woman powerhouse" by Annie Mac and "just amazing" by Lauren Laverne, will be dropping a series of covers by artists that have influenced her sound and aesthetic, each one from a different decade. Starting with the '60s and progressing in chronological order until she reaches the '90s, they'll then be released in one prime package as a free-to-download Covers EP. Not only is each track a classic in its own right, but they've all been given the FEMME treatment, resulting in some uniquely brilliant interpretations that fans of both her and the original artists will love.

FEMME kicked things off last month with a hip-hop-flavoured version of The Shangri-Las' classic "Sophisticated Boom Boom" (stream below).

The second and latest track to be lifted from the EP, from the '70s, is a cover of Anita Ward's "Ring My Bell". In regards to the song, FEMME says, "This is THE feel-good female disco anthem. It was an obvious choice for me, but certainly not easy to cover. I brought it up to date with bigger beats and I put my own spin on the vocals but tried to keep all of the original sass that the '70s version oozes."

While the concept behind the release involves some significant time-travel, the amazing thing is that it still stands up as a brilliantly coherent EP that sums up everything that's awesome about FEMME's own music - girls, beats and bass.

Stay connected with FEMME via Facebook and Twitter to be among one of the first to hear her third installment off the EP, which she will be unveiling very soon!

One more thing, FEMME is no stranger when it comes to covering classic songs, earlier this year she shared a cover of Aretha Franklin and Otis Redding's "R.E.S.P.E.C.T.", which you can download for free here.
