Sirma - Trigger

Originally born in Istanbul, Turkey but now living in New York, multi-talented 24-year-old experimental pop artist Sirma (who is often regarded as the Turkish Björk) has just unveiled the music video for her new single "Trigger", directed by Daniel Goldhaber and Michael Bucuzzo and taken from her recently released 4-song EP, Instincts, which you can stream in it's entirety below.

In regards to the single, Sirma tells All Access Music; "'Trigger' is about anything in life that triggers a feeling in me. While I was writing it, I mostly focused on the power of the nature. My brain just canceled out all the things I was worried about for a minute, and solely focused on the rain, the sunshine, the wind and how I sensed them all by seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting… Simply, feeling. The song has an unsettling and melancholic vibe because all the things that triggers a feeling in me, given by nature and life, are inspiring and intriguing but also intimidating and sometimes even terrifying. “Trigger” comes from my fragility."

Also be sure to read through some of these highlights that we've picked out from her rather impressive bio.

  • At thirteen years old, Sirma was already a budding classical pianist with her eye on attending conservatory. Devastated by the news that her trusted and beloved piano instructor had been arrested, Sırma passed on her conservatory dreams, and instead attended one of Turkey's most rigorous and respected high schools to focus on her academics. But music wouldn't let her go. The school's orchestra conductor discovered her talents and encouraged her to devote herself to becoming a jazz vocalist.
  • In 2007, Sirma was awarded the prestigious Arif Mardin Fellowship to attend an intensive summer program at Berklee College of Music, and upon returning she placed third in one of Turkey's most respected jazz vocal competitions as the youngest entrant.
  • In 2009, international superstar Akon, in partnership with Pepsi, hand-picked a group of singers around the globe to form the Pepsi World Choir. Sırma was chosen to represent Turkey. As a Pepsi World Choir participant, she sang on Akon's single "Oh Africa", featuring Keri Hilson. It was recorded in Record Plant Recording Studios in Hollywood, CA, with Akon, Keri Hilson and the Soweto Gospel Choir, and the song was ultimately used as the anthem for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Sırma also appeared in the music video, which debuted globally at the 2010 Grammy Awards.
  • Sırma was a member an experimental rock band called Helicopria. The group toured internationally, opening for Mando Diao at a 17,000 capacity venue in Turkey in addition to performing on CNN and Turkey's most popular late night talk show for an estimated audience of 25 million.
