CUT_ - Undertow

Ahead of their much anticipated appearance at Eurosonic Noorderslag next week, emerging Dutch electronic duo CUT_ have today unveiled their shimmering new synth-pop gem called "Undertow", the follow-up to their debut single, "Tune In Tune Out" which quickly hit the number two spot on Hype Machine’s Most Popular chart and received lavish tastemaker support across the globe.

On the meaning behind the track, Cut_ say: "The story involves someone turning into a victim of their own success. Caught in the invisible undertow. Think about Kurt Cobain who crumbled, a David Bowie who hid behind drugs but managed to survive or Janis Joplin who didn't and tragically died of an overdose. All were people trying to escape the immense pressure that’s been put upon them by others. As soon as they became successful they turned into public domain. When you're vulnerable you need protection. Who will provide that? And at what cost?"

Musically, the band sought to reflect this meaning with the sonic of the track. "The relationship between the somewhat darker lyrics and the more spacious sound of the 'Undertow' creates a certain tension, and that's something we like to bring into our music," the duo explains: "On the surface, the sound of the song shapes a pretty clear image, but when you listen carefully the grim side of the track emerges. 'Undertow' has various layers that make it more interesting for us. We need music that doesn’t just unravel itself in the first listen but brings a complexity that you can discover slowly as you hear it more often."
