Introducing Jugu (rhymes with "voodoo"), otherwise known as the alias of electronic pop producer and vocalist Juliet Guterres. Born and raised in Sydney, Jugu started her solo project in 2010, writing and recording from her home studio.
Inspired by acts such as Little Dragon, Chairlift, Chvrches and many others, Jugu creates her unique sound by layering vocals over synthesisers and electronic drums, experimenting with sounds to find a happy place between the engagingly familiar and intriguingly obscure.
Her first EP, Getting Closer was released at the end of 2010 and received airplay from community radio stations around Australia. One song in particular, "The Deep", was included in FBi Radio's The Bridge - Rough Edges Compilation, which also featured other well known Australian artists such as Elizabeth Rose and RÜFÜS. The music video for "The Deep" (below) was featured on Rage and named as "Indie Clip of the Week".
Now in 2014, Jugu has found a slightly darker edge to her music. Her previously released track "All The Girls", was described as a musical retaliation to sexism and general sleaze-bagery, and features her playing the alto-saxophone, a skill learnt in high school jazz band.
And now today, Jugu returns with her brilliant new track entitled "Rolling", which has just been chosen as the "Song of the Day" by The 405 as well as "Pick of the Week" by Chris Komerek from Breakfast on Radio Adelaide.
With many more songs to be released in the coming months, keep an eye out for Jugu as she attempts to make her mark on the Australian music scene, and with any luck the global music scene as well.
