19-year-old Oakland-based singer/songwriter and ukulele player Maia, aka mxmtoon (pronounced em-ex-em-toon) has today unveiled her new song and accompanying music video for "seasonal depression", the third single following "high & dry" and "prom dress" to be taken from her upcoming debut album, the masquerade, due out on September 17th. "seasonal depression" sees mxmtoon tackling a complex issue with charm and honesty, all within the confines of a 3 minute song. mxmtoon refers to her songwriting as "rhyming diary entries", and it's this personal insight into her life and experiences that has built a remarkable bond between her and her fans.
Speaking on the track, mxmtoon says:
"'seasonal depression' was born to fill this gap I found in music, and create something wonderful. I adore that a song written so gloom and doom can sound like the sunniest musical number of a summer movie. My hope with the song is to provide affirmation to those who find facing certain days beyond difficult, but to simultaneously uplift them from their stormy thoughts. Music can provide comedy, validation, and insight, and I feel strongly 'seasonal depression' hits all three wonderfully."
