Los Angeles-based urban pop artist TRISHES explores the difficulties of self-awareness in a post-truth, social media era in her new music video for her song "Saraswati", one of the many standout tracks off her recently released Ego EP which came out earlier this year and garnered praise from notable tastemakers such as Earmilk, Vanyaland, and Exclaim!
In the meta musicv video for "Saraswati", we first see dancer and choreographer Kalbe Isaacson filming herself through her front facing phone camera, contorting her face and body to create the image she wants to portray. Shortly after it's revealed that TRISHES, a representation of love and death, is filming Kalbe through another lens. Later, mirrors unveil director and videographer Tamara Arroba filming both of them in their emotional tug of war. The abstract movement piece depicts the different perspectives that we use to formulate a concept of reality, as well as the literal and figurative masks we wear that give us a false sense of self and surrounding. The three women were not only the cast, crew and choreographers but the editing was also done by TRISHES herself, further establishing herself as one of the most innovative and compelling multidisciplinary artists working today.
Speaking on the video, TRISHES says:
"We use our environment to reflect ourselves; we learn who we are through the context of other. A lot of what reflects us may not reflect us accurately - like a funhouse mirror or a ripple in a pond reflection. For now I've come to the conclusion that true self awareness comes from our relationship to love and death."
