Introducing electronic-soul artist BMBSHL (bombshell), otherwise known as Canadian singer/songwriter and producer Brenna MacQuarrie.
Combining a mixture of distorted synths, hip hop beats, and classic soul, BMBSHL began producing her own music electronically in the summer of 2012 and a year later found herself deep in her craft wanting to share her work with others. She was inspired to make a solo album after spending time in the studio writing and co-producing songs with artists Jay Sparrow and Brad Smith. They challenged her to write a song every week for the remainder of the summer in 2013 and BMBSHL submerged herself in her own creativity.
"I spent the entire summer in my bedroom-turned-studio, staring into my laptop until I got the sounds I wanted. That’s probably why so much of this record is introspective; I wrote most of it alone in my basement, armed only with my imagination and my new KRK Rokit 6's" recalls BMBSHL.
Her 12-song self-titled debut album released earlier this year contains collaborations with Toronto producer Mike Schlosser and musician Fred Brenton, who added their own creative vision on the tracks "Recover" and "Stories." Songs "Pray Enough" and "Calling" hold important and powerful messages for BMBSHL as they were written from the pain and grief of the passing of Edmonton musician and friend Kelly Callin (The Soulicitors).
Even though correlations can be made to artists like James Blake, Massive Attack or even Erykah Badu, Brenna's stunning voice shines through multi-layered trip-hop beats, distorted synths and visceral songs of heartbreak and disillusionment.
Check out the music videos for "Strike" and "Recover" below. Both tracks appear on her self-titled debut album which is available now on iTunes.
