Over the past few weeks, London-based singer/songwriter and producer Laura Bettinson, otherwise known as FEMME, who has been described as a "one-woman powerhouse" by Annie Mac and "just amazing" by Lauren Laverne, has been dropping a series of covers by artists that have influenced her sound and aesthetic, each one from a different decade. Starting with the '60s and progressing in chronological order until she reached the '90s. Each track has been given the FEMME treatment, resulting in some uniquely brilliant interpretations that fans of both her and the original artists will love.
FEMME kicked things off last month with a hip-hop-flavoured version of The Shangri-Las' "Sophisticated Boom Boom" followed by her rendition of Anita Ward's "Ring My Bell", and just last week she unveiled her cover of one of Madonna's most memorable classics, "Vogue". Today, FEMME returns with her forth and final track off her upcoming EP, a cover of Adamski and Seal's hit single "Killer".
"Killer" was originally released by Adam Tinley, aka Adamski in 1990. It was Adamski's breakthrough single, but is now more notable for introducing Seal as a vocalist. The track was a major hit in the UK, it reached number one, spending four weeks at the top of the chart in May 1990. In total, the single sold over 400,000 copies in the UK, earning it a BPI Gold certification. In 1991 Seal re-recorded "Killer" for his eponymous debut album, produced by Trevor Horn. The single release of Seal's version peaked at #8 in the UK, squeezed onto the Billboard Hot 100 at #100 and peaked at #9 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart with a remix by William Orbit. In 2005, Seal released Killer 2005 which brought the single back to the Hot Dance Club Play chart, where it reached number one. - X
