Halsey - Hurricane

Having already firmly cemented her place as one of our top five favorite new artists of 2014, 20-year-old New Jersey native and alt-pop superstar in the making Ashley Frangipane, aka Halsey (an anagram of Ashley) has just unveiled the music video for her new song called "Hurricane", which is taken from her forthcoming and highly-anticipated debut EP Room 93 available October 28th via Astralwerks.

We first became acquainted with Halsey earlier this year right after she released her highly infectious debut single "Ghost", which has since garnered nearly half a million listeners on SoundCloud alone. Upon first hearing the single we were hooked and instantly became huge fans of hers. However, at the time, we knew very little about her but the one thing we did know for certain, was that Halsey was destined for greatness.

Thanks to Billboard (who got the exclusive premiere of Halsey's new video for "Hurricane") we have now learned that Halsey has been playing music of some sort for most of her life. She started out on string instruments - violin, viola, cello - but when she turned 14 she shifted gears. "I thought I was gonna be the next Alanis Morissette," she says, "so I bought myself an acoustic guitar." At 18, when she found herself in financial trouble and without a place to live, music suddenly became her lifeline - gigs provided money for rent, and Halsey played "acoustic shows under different names," taking the Megabus from New Jersey to various cities to perform her sets.

The songs on Room 93 are inspired by Halsey's time in hotel rooms. "A hotel room is almost like a prop place," Halsey says. "I spent the past year of my life in and out of hotel rooms and I've formed relationships with people out of hotel rooms. It's kind of an exhausting and fascinating and interesting phenomena." In addition, Room 93 is also a visual EP, 4 of the 5 songs on the EP will each be accompanied by its own video and each video will focus on a group of people in a hotel room. "We were trying to do something authentic and raw that spoke to a sense of surrealism," says Halsey. "The videos are very real: the kids have chipped nail polish and dirty faces and acne and their clothes are weird. I just wanted to put a bunch of kids in a room and let them interact as they would," she says.
