Toronto-born, Brooklyn-based electro-pop artist (Joanie) Wolkoff has today unveiled her absolutely brilliant yet slightly NSFW video for "The Homecoming", which also serves as the lead single taken from her forthcoming debut album, Without Shame, due out on April 15th. The album was produced by Icarus Moth and engineered by the Grammy award-winning Ariel Borujow (Kanye West, Madonna and Nicki Minaj).
The video was written, directed and produced by the Italian creative duo Era Ora and Ivana Gloria during a recent sojourn to Brooklyn. The Milan-based creatives set out to cinematically recreate an outlandish party they'd attended in one of NYC's many houses of thrillingly ill repute. Culling a cast of non-actors from their community, like Wolkoff's longtime muse/live show choreographer Ken Peyser and a food designer designated with dressing a table with the most vibrant, inedible delicacies possible, Eva Ora and Ivana Gloria bring you a vivid, NSFW visual story to explore the gripping and often painful process of learning where we don't belong, and having the courage to investigate where we do.
Speaking on the video, Wolkoff explains:
"I think everyone knows what it is to wind up smack dab in the middle of a new situation where the onus is on you to fit in and there’s a pressing sense of having to live out a probationary term with whoever you’re building a fresh relationship with before they’ll stop looking at you like some kind of alien specimen. This music video’s plot follows a similar narrative challenge. Thought it was ok to drink face-first directly out of your soup bowl? Wrong. Thought you’d feel at home during a party full of weirdos if you were a naked half-dog, half-human? Try again. While finding acceptance can be very trial and error, look at the interesting turns we take when we come up against these impasses. It's these situations that drive me to be my most innovative and rub my face right in my own identity until there’s no denying who I really am. I like that."
